Gastroschisis Working Group

Goals and Objectives

To improve outcomes for all gastroschisis patients by standardizing clinical practice utilizing quality improvement methods and conducting high quality research

Accomplishments

  • Assessed variation in practice across all UCfC sites.
  • Standardized management for gastroschisis infants.
  • Demonstrated good adherence rates to a standardized pathway.
  • Standardized pathway was associated decreased antibiotics, intubation and opioids days and time to first feed
  • Standardized pathway was associated with increased use of bedside closure technique.
  • Assessed fetal growth for infants with gastroschisis.
  • Assessed rates of growth failure for gastroschisis
  • Standardized nutritional management & demonstrated improvement in linear growth
  • Developed a biorepository of stool and milk samples to better understand how the gut microbiome contributes to intestinal dysmotility
